Briefing on the latest development of TGE'S project
On 5th August 2016, a briefing on the latest project development was held at Hyatt Regency Hotel, Kota Kinabalu. Dr. Ryan Libbey, the well site geologist from Jacobs New Zealand, delivered a presentation highlighting the positive outcomes of the first exploration well, including:
High downhole temperature, near neutral chemistry;
Fracture based permeability;
Hydrothermal mineralogy (proof of mineral alteration due to high temperature and geothermal activity);
Confirmation of conceptual model indicating upflow below North-West summit of Mt. Maria
Minister of Energy, Green Technology, and Water, YB Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili, in welcoming the positive results from the exploration well, reiterated the continuing support of the Federal Government and its agencies for TGE to successfully implement this project. The project under the Feed-in Tariff scheme was conceded as very green with extremely low carbon footprints and with very high availability and reliability rates. Once in commercial operation, this project will put Malaysia on the world map of geothermal energy generation. He also said that geothermal energy had an important role to play in the renewable energy mix.
This event received wide coverage in the local electronic and print media, and was also picked up by international geothermal press.
