Site Visit by Chief Secretary Government, YBhg Tan Sri Dr. Ali Hamsa, 28th May 2016
The Federal Government has provided TGE with a Facilitation Fund (grant) to support the project. In this respect, a delegation from the Prime Minister's Department, led by YBhg. Tan Sri Dr. Ali Hamsa (Chief Secretary to the Government) undertook a site visit on 28 May 2016. Also present was the Director of Sabah Parks, Dr. Jamili Nais and some of his staff. The objective of the visit was to see at first hand the current project progress.
The delegation was welcomed by TGE Executive Chairman, Mr. Ramzi Raad and other TGE staff. A briefing on the overall project progress was given by TGE CEO, Dr. Alex Smillie, while wellsite geologist, Dr. Ryan Libbey (from Jacobs, New Zealand) highlighted progress with the drilling of the first exploratory well, which was at a depth of more than 1000 metres. All the core analysis and temperature trending confirmed the presence of an active hydrothermal system at Apas Kiri.
At the end of the briefings, Tan Sri Ali stated that he was very happy with the progress achieved by the project so far, even through encountering many difficulties and challenges. The project was Malaysia's first geothermal project and as such was one of national interest. The Federal and State Governments would continue to fully support the project, and he looked forward to project completion and the export of power to the Sabah State Grid, expected to be in 2018.
