STAKEHOLDERS' CONSULTATION MEETING FOR 36MW GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANT PROJECT BY TAWAU GREEN ENERGY
As required under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) protocol, Tawau Green Energy Sdn. Bhd. (TGE), developer of Malaysia's first geothermal power plant, held a Stakeholders' Consultation Meeting on 20 July 2011.
About 250 people, comprising villagers living in the vicinity of the project, government officers, local utility (SESB), local politicians, print media and NGOs, attended the meeting held at Balai Raya Kg. Tass, Andrassy, Tawau.
TGE Project Director, Ir. Andrew Amaladoss, and Managing Director of Integra Carbon Sdn. Bhd., Mr. Azhar Anas, conducted the briefings and Question & Answer sessions.
Feedback and response from all sectors of the participants was very positive and highly encouraging. Participants praised TGE for organising the event, saying it gave all stakeholders an idea of the project, its benefits and how it was going to be implemented. Environmental NGOs applauded the company for undertaking a "green" project, even though it was a challenging effort. The local community requested that they be given priority when it came to job opportunities and minor contracts.
The event was given wide media coverage in the local newspapers the following day. TGE plans to have further dialogue sessions with interested parties to focus on specific issues in the future.
